When is a Del Monte Banana Sticker Worth $25,280?

The following short text on the history of banana labels is provided by John Kirchner (» here you can get some more information about the editor).

The contemporary use of banana labels in the United States dates from the eat Chiquita labels on fruit.

The marketing idea, however, was not new. United, for example, experimented with a brand called "Meloripe" as far back as the 1930's.

The concept, however, is still older. There was some speculation that bananas from German Cameroon (Kamerun) might have carried labels even before World War I, but that information seems eronous, and the first German labels probably date from the 1930's, long after the loss of her African colonies.
